Depressed uni dropout gets 10 years for bank robbery

A BEIJING university student has been sentenced to 10 years for robbing 100,000 yuan (US$US$14,700)) from a bank by taking a woman as hostage at knifepoint.
Li Li with University of Science and Technology Beijing was also fined 20,000 yuan today by Haidian District People's Court after a court hearing starting yesterday, China National Radio reported.
Li said he wouldn't appeal the verdict.
Li, born to a rural family in east China's Jiangxi Province, was enrolled to the university in 2003. He had to quit school after regularly failing his examinations due to taking too many jobs to raise the tuition fees, his father told the state radio.
On July 12 last year, he ran into a Bank of China branch at USTB, took out a knife and took a woman customer as hostage while demanding 100,000 yuan from the bank clerks.
Police and university security guards arrived quickly and caught Li later that day.
