Deranged knife attacker shot dead

POLICE shot and killed a man said to be suffering from mental problems after he stabbed a pedestrian to death and injured 12 others in a street in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province early yesterday.

At around 7:09am, police received calls from residents in Acheng District of Harbin, the provincial capital, reporting that a man had assaulted pedestrians with a knife on Pailu Avenue.

Police rushed to the scene and shot Pan Yuanfei as he attacked two officers with a knife after tear gas had failed to subdue him.

Four of the 12 injured were seriously hurt and all were being treated in hospital.

The first victim was Pan's elder sister, who lives in Pailu Avenue and was seriously wounded at her home. The other 12 victims were unknown to Pan.

Local people said the killer suffered from a mental disorder. Pan was 38 and a native of Mao'ershan Town of Harbin, said a police spokesman.

The spokesman said Pan had been sentenced to six years in jail for robbery in 1991.
