Deserter-killer denies charge after death sentence

AN army deserter who was sentenced to death for killing two people, injuring a sentry guard and committing armed robbery denied the manslaughter charge at the court of appeals yesterday.

Wu Yong, 32, a native of Yibin City, Sichuan Province, told the Sichuan Higher People's Court that he didn't kill his fellow soldier in 2000 and a 12-year-old boy in 2002 , today's Chengdu Evening News reported.

Wu overturned his previous testimony which he said was for "attracting public interest." He claimed he saw his fellow soldier surnamed Guo killed by a villager after the two ran from their barracks to Hebei Province. He denied the charge of stabbing Guo to death over a dispute.

Wu also denied killing the boy surnamed Tang to draw blood to treat his illness. He said his partner Tang Zhengfang alone shot the boy to death.
Wu admitted shooting a sentry guarding a satellite observatory in Yibin in 2003 and fired at a security guard at the gate of Yibin City Government in the same year.

Wu said the gunfire was meant as "an eye-catcher" so he deliberately missed to the target.
The court didn't hand down a final verdict.
