Desk scandal school to be merged
A SCHOOL where pupils had to lie under scorching sun to take exams is to be merged with another institution.
There was outcry after it emerged that pupils took exams outside as a measure to prevent cheating because the school could not afford to provide enough desks.
A teacher known as Wei Wei from Chenxi Primary School in Anhui Province, posted a picture on Weibo.com, showing dozens of students were lying on the ground in front of the shabby building, writing on paper.
She said all of the children, from one-grade to six-grade, had to stay under the sun for three hours every month to take routine exams.
This was because two students usually shared a desk, which offered opportunities for cheating, Jianghuai Morning Post reported.
Students are accustomed to it and their parents don't seem to have a strong opinion, Wei said.
"We've all become numb seeing it," she added.
Zhang Xiangkun, senior official from the school, insisted students take exams outside only on sunny days and teachers are ordered to accompany them.
But an official, surnamed Li, with Woyang County Education Bureau said the private-run school is facing punishment and will be merged to another school over a series of problems.
He didn't mention what the other issues are.
"We believe the school shows a lack of consideration and this sends a chill to our hearts," Li said.
