Detainee's contentious death to be probed
THE death of a detainee in Harbin City who police said died from a cold will be investigated after his family claimed to have found multiple injuries on the body.
Wang Lijia, 57, died about 20 days after he was thrown into a detention house in the northeastern China city on May 27 on charges of conning land compensation funds from local governments, Beijing News reported yesterday.
Wang Lijia's son Wang Guopeng said he visited his father twice after he was taken by police and he appeared normal.
The family lost contact with Wang Lijia on June 8 after police officers told them he was transferred to another detention center but refused to tell where he was and why he was transferred.
The next time Wang Guopeng saw Wang Lijia, his father was a cold body lying dead in a mortuary. Wang Guopeng said police officers told him that his father died from a fever after catching a cold, the report quoted him.
Wang's family doubted the explanation, saying Wang Lijia was perfectly healthy and could farm a dozen acres of land all by himself.
The family found bruises on the man's body during the autopsy on June 18, which increased their suspicion that Wang Lijia was beaten to death. The police didn't explain to the Wang family how the man got the injuries on his head and chest.
An official with the Harbin Public Security Bureau said an investigation was started by provincial forensic experts yesterday to determine the cause Wang's death.
There may have been many detainee deaths in China lately, accompanied with questionable explanations, creating a public uproar.
