Detention center death

ONE person died in a detention room on Saturday in Fuzhou, capital of southeastern China's Fujian Province, which is the second sudden death in a detention center this year after another died in the same city on March 23, police said over the weekend.

A drug user named Chen Hongqiang was found in a coma in his bed by his roommate at 7:10am on Saturday in Fu°?qing Detention Center, said Liu Ming, director of the political department of Fuzhou Public Security Bureau.

Police officials and doctors arrived. Chen was sent to hospital but died there, Liu said.

An investigation into the death has been launched by the provincial police department and the municipal prosecutor, Liu said.

Chen was detained by police after he was found using drugs at an entertainment venue at 9pm on April 1. He was sentenced to 10 days in detention, Liu said.

Wen Huilong, the other person to die recently in a detention room, is said to have fallen out of bed and hit his head in the Second Detention Center of Fuzhou. Wen also died in hospital.

Investigations are under way.
