Detention center suicide under scrutiny
PROSECUTORS are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a convicted official who allegedly hung himself in a detention center in Suzhou in east China’s Anhui Province, according to a report posted yesterday on the website of the People’s Daily.
The official, surnamed Xu, was sentenced on Monday to 12 years in prison for taking bribes worth 2 million yuan (US$322,000).
Xu heard the verdict in an interrogation room of the detention center. He was left in the center overnight and was reportedly found dead the following morning at 8:15am.
Authorities are now said to probing officials and guards at the center over possible dereliction of duty charges, the website said.
Amid the central government’s ongoing crackdown on corruption, numerous fallen officials have taken their lives in order to avoid punishment, protect their families or shield their superiors, according to the report.
By February 7, at least 99 officials are believed to have died of “unnatural” causes since the start of the current graft-busting campaign, Caijing magazine reported.
Among this group, 23 officials were said to have been under investigation for suspected disciplinary or criminal offenses.
