Detention house cleared in detainee's death

A DETENTION house in Kunming, capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province, has been cleared of the death of a detainee who died from severe pneumonia, an investigation concluded.

The detainee, Wang Shukun, 43, was not beaten or abused by police officers or other detainees in the detention house in Kunming's Guandu District, the Kunming Public Security Bureau and Kunming People's Procuratorate announced the investigation results yesterday.

Nor did Wang hurt himself during detention or have any other accidents that might have damaged his health.

Investigators have checked video tapes of the detention house and interviewed every detainee, the Kunming-based City News today quoted Li Yi, deputy chief prosecutor of Guandu District People's Procuratorate, as saying.

An autopsy was performed on Wang on Sunday with two of Wang's family members present. The body had no wounds and didn't contain any poisons, and it was confirmed he died from severe pneumonia.

Wang who had a history of drug use had been held in the detention house since July 19 on suspicion of disturbing the social order.

He became sick and got feverish on August 6 and was immediately sent to a local hospital where he died two days later.
