Detentions after waste water dumping
Three executives at a company producing corn starch have been detained after it was found to have illegally dumped more than 270,000 tons of waste water in northwest China’s Gansu Province.
Zhang Yande, boss of the privately-run Ronghua Industry and Trade Co Ltd, is under criminal investigation. The others, who were not named, are under administrative detention.
Several local environmental officials have been suspended and are under investigation, according to Xinhua news agency.
The company was fined more than 3 million yuan (US$483,000) and has stopped production. Its machines have been seized and underground pipelines used to transport almost 84,000 tons waste water to central Tennger Desert have been removed, Xinhua said.
The company begun trial operations last year without getting official approval after a move from urban Liangzhou District in Gansu to the near-desert Shazigou.
