Developer gave gifts to officials

A construction company yesterday denied hiring an “AIDS demolition team” to intimidate residents into making way for a real estate project in Henan Province.
Pei Zongshuan, general manager of Yi’an Real Estate Developer Co, said a demolition company authorized by the government had hired the team.
However, he admitted the company was in the habit of giving gifts to officials and others at Chinese New Year for their “contributions” to the company.
The admission came after reporters got hold of a list of gifts given by the company earlier this year which named 31 Nanyang officials, all of whom were involved in a Yi’an demolition project.
Pei told thepaper.cn the company usually invited officials to take part in its Chinese New Year celebrations and gave them gifts to express the company’s gratitude.
