Dial 110 for all emergencies

China's three emergency numbers, 110 for police, 119 for fire and 122 for traffic accident, will merge into one. Hotline 110 will be easy to memorize and call for emergency help, the Ministry of Public Security said yesterday.

But there is no detail on when and how the three hotlines will be merged across the country, Beijing News reported.

An official from the ministry's command center told the newspaper that the number of emergency calls has kept increasing in recent years. In the first 11 months of last year, the 110 call station received a record 127 million calls nationwide and dispatched police 178 million person-time.

"Traditionally, people have to call different number for different emergency, which is pretty troublesome as people are in great distress," the official said. "Now they just need to dial 110 for any emergency. It's much more convenient."

According to the ministry, some cities and counties already merged emergency numbers into one. By the end of December, 2,088 police departments at county level and 294 police bureaus at city level have completed the process.
