Dialysis patients show symptoms of anemia after treatment
MEDICAL experts in Lianyungang, a city in eastern Jiangsu Province, found 23 of the 79 dialysis patients being treated in a local hospital had a low red blood cell count, a newspaper reported today.
Tests conducted by the Lianyungang Health Bureau showed the dialysis solution used by the hospital could be the cause for a drop in red blood cells. The bureau has sent blood samples to the national authorities for examination, according to today's Modern Express.
A patient surnamed Zhou died of severe complications of cerebral infarction, uremia and high blood pressure after undergoing treatment in the hospital, a bureau official said. A postmortem is needed to determine if his death was attributed to the dialysis solution.
Earlier investigations made by the hospital and health authorities in the city and the province showed no pollution in the treatment.
Since December 14, 23 patients have shown symptoms of anemia after the dialysis treatment. The Lianyungang No. 1 People's Hospital suspended the treatment on December 22 and transferred all its dialysis patients to other hospitals.
All of them are now in stable condition, the local health bureau said.
