Diaoyu Islands anger
Chinese protesters vented their anger against Japan yesterday when they took to the streets to assert China's claim to sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands.
Meanwhile, China "expressed deep concern" over a Japanese demonstration yesterday at the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu.
Ma made the remarks when asked to comment on the demonstration.
Hundreds of Japanese right-wing organization members demonstrated in front of the Chinese Embassy.
In China, more than 2,000 people gathered in Chengdu, capital of the southwestern Sichuan Province, at around 2pm, unfurling banners and shouting: "Defend the Diaoyu Islands," "Fight Japan," and other slogans.
More people joined the protest as the procession marched through some of the city's main streets, with some distributing Chinese national flags.
In Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province, thousands of college students marched, holding flags, banners and shouting slogans such as "Boycott Japanese goods" and singing the Chinese national anthem.
In Zhengzhou, capital of central China's Henan Province, college students gathered in a downtown square and then marched through the city, shouting: "Long live the motherland," "Return the Diaoyu Islands to China."
China-Japan relations have been strained since a collision between two Japanese Coast Guard patrol ships and a Chinese trawler on September 7 in the East China Sea off the China's Diaoyu Islands.
