Diary confessions cost Han his job

An official in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has been sacked and removed from the Chinese Communist Party after his diary, detailing affairs with female colleagues and his accepting bribes, was posted online.

A statement from Guangxi's Tobacco Monopoly Bureau said yesterday that Han Feng, 53, head of the bureau's sales department, had been sacked and kicked out of the Party.

The regional procuratorate approved his arrest on Saturday after most of the details available online had been verified including his accepting bribes from local tobacco dealers.

Han, 53, had been in charge of Guangxi's tobacco distribution prior to the scandal and had served several of Guangxi's local tobacco monopoly administrations as their chiefs.

He had been suspended from his job in the regional tobacco monopoly bureau while prosecutors in Nanning, Guangxi's capital, began an investigation last Tuesday.

Prosecutors allege that Han accepted 482,000 yuan (US$70,608) in cash and an apartment worth 300,000 yuan from companies contracted with refurbishment and construction of office buildings for tobacco bureaus during his tenure in Guangxi's Qinzhou and Laibin cities.

Han used to be head of tobacco monopoly bureaus there.

Part of the details of his accepting bribes mentioned in the diary had been confirmed after prosecutors had questioned the dealers involved.

Han's diary, which included his sexual relationships with five women, was posted online in February and word about the scandal spread rapidly.

Some of the women involved had been questioned during the investigation.

Guangxi's Tobacco Monopoly Bureau suspended him on February 22.

In the diary, Han describes his life and work, listing his lovers, income and even commenting about his health.

One entry read: "As to playing women, Xiao Pan is hooked, Tan is regular, and Mo is in the queue. This year I had abundant romantic encounters but had to pay attention to my health."

The man who said he posted the diary online has claimed to be the husband of one of Han's mistresses.
