Diner charged US$6 per shrimp
A DINER who was charged 38 yuan (US$6) for each boiled shrimp at a restaurant in Qingdao, Shandong Province, will get his money back, West China Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.
The incident happened when the diner, surnamed Xiao, who hails from Sichuan Province, and his family dined at the Shande seafood grill restaurant in Qingdao on October 4.
Before Xiao placed the order, the waiters told him that the dish cost 38 yuan. But when he asked for the bill he was in for a shock — he was charged 38 yuan for each shrimp! The meal itself cost him a whopping 1,338 yuan.
Xiao refused to pay and called the police, who passed the buck on to the pricing bureau. With the police gone, he was forced to shell out 800 yuan after the restaurant owner started to threaten him.
Yesterday, Xiao received a phone call from the pricing bureau of Shibei District in Qingdao. He was told that the restaurant owner, who had vanished, was caught and he would get a full refund, the daily reported.
But Xiao insisted on paying the bill for the meal, which he estimated to be less than 200 yuan. He just wanted the rest of his money back.
The issue came to light after Xiao’s daughter wrote about the incident on her Weibo, which alerted the authorities in Qingdao.
The restaurant has since been shut down and the owner ordered to pay 90,000 yuan as fine.
Some officials from the local pricing bureau, market watchdog and tourism authority were suspended.
