Dioxane in baby products

ELEVEN baby shampoo and bath products have been found containing dioxane, which has been linked to cancer, by the Hong Kong Consumer Council, Legal Evening News reported yesterday.

The newspaper said the 11 products are not sold in stores on the Chinese mainland but are available online. One of the items is a Watsons brand product. The company was not available for comment.

The Shanghai Food and Drug administration said it was not aware of the matter, but will keep a close eye on it. Most Watsons Sweet Dream Baby Bath products are no longer available on Taobao.com as of yesterday.

Dioxane is irritating to the eyes and respiratory tract. It is suspected of causing damage to the central nervous system, liver and kidneys.

The US Environmental Protection Agency classifies the chemical as a probable human carcinogen and a known carcinogen in animals. It is classified in the US state of California as cancer-causing.

Media reports said the Watsons baby bath product contains 6.6 parts per million of dioxane.

The Chinese mainland and Hong Kong haven't set a limit on the amount of dioxane permitted in shampoo and other personal care products. The US FDA's limit is 20ppm.
