Diplomats learn to say it in Chinese
FIFTY-SIX diplomats from 26 foreign embassies in China have registered to attend a 10-week Chinese language learning program hosted by Hanban, or the Confucius Institute Headquarters.
The program, which began yesterday, offers primary and secondary level courses for diplomats. The primary course focuses on basic dialogues in Chinese, while the other focuses on how to describe daily affairs and express personal feelings in more sophisticated Chinese.
Apart from language learning, diplomats will also have classes in Chinese culture, including calligraphy and painting.
Xu Lin, director-general of Hanban, said the organization will also provide online classes for diplomats.
"We have selected more than 50 volunteers among university students to be one-on-one tutors for the diplomats," she said.
Hanban's first language program for diplomats began in July for 31 foreign diplomats from 16 countries.
