Director Feng to revamp Spring Festival Gala show
WELL-KNOWN film director Feng Xiaogang will be the general director of the China Central Television 2014 Spring Festival Gala, the broadcaster announced yesterday.
Although mostly known for his work on comedies, Feng has explored serious subjects in recent years, such as the deadly 1976 earthquake that rocked north China's city of Tangshan and the great famine that struck central China's Henan Province in 1942.
"Directing the Spring Festival Gala is not my line of work," Feng said, adding that choosing him shows CCTV's resolve to reform the high-profile annual performance.
Feng, who has been an audience member of the gala, said he would entertain with "sincerity, warmth and heartening elements."
Zhao Benshan, a well-known comedian, will be deputy general director in charge of the gala's comedy programming, according to CCTV.
The CCTV Spring Festival Gala has been a fixture for most Chinese families on the eve of Chinese New Year since 1982.
However, its popularity has declined in recent years, with Internet users dismissing the gala as rigid and outdated.
