Director Zhang Yimou fined 7.5m yuan for having too many kids
FAMOUS film director Zhang Yimou was ordered to pay 7.48 million yuan (US$1.2 million) for having more children than allowed under family planning laws, authorities said today.
Zhang and his wife, Chen Ting, are required to pay the fines within 30 days if they don’t seek a review or file a lawsuit, according to a letter from the population and family planning bureau in Binhu District in the eastern city of Wuxi.
If they don’t pay before the deadline, they will be charged late fees. The bureau will apply for approval to force the couple to pay, China Central TV reported.
On November 30, the Wuxi family planning commission confirmed Zhang’s three children with Chen were all born out of wedlock and in violation of the family planning policy.
The couple registered their marriage in September 2011, but their children were born in 2001, 2004 and 2006 in Beijing, investigators found.
Zhang and his ex-wife Xiao Hua have a daughter.
