Director sues for movie cash

Film director Zhang Yimou is suing the production company that he has worked with for more than a decade, seeking 15 million yuan (US$2.5 million) he says is owed from one of his movies.

At Beijing Chaoyang District Court yesterday, his lawyers said he hadn’t received his share of distribution money for his 2009 “A Woman, a Gun and a Noodle Shop,” a dark comedy about a noodle shop owner scheming to murder his wife and her lover.

In its defense, Beijing New Picture Film Co said Zhang had begun the lawsuit in 2014 after a deadline had expired.

The company has worked with Zhang on several of his films, including two of his best-known: “House of Flying Daggers” and “Hero.”

Zhang wasn’t in court, and no date was given for a judgment.
