Directors jailed over TV tower collapse

TWO former radio and television administration officials have been jailed for negligence and taking bribes after a TV tower collapsed in a rainstorm last year in northern China's Hebei Province.

The Jinzhou Radio and Television Administration's former director Yang Xiubin was today jailed for one year with two years' reprieve by Chang'an District People's Court in Hebei's capital Shijazhuang, and fined 10,000 yuan (US$1,465).

The former vice director Shi Zhifeng was jailed for 18 months, Legal Daily reported today.

Both were convicted of negligence and taking bribes from unlicensed contractors to carry out the construction project.

Two contractors Li Jinrong and Xue Yuqiang were sentenced to 3 1/2 years for causing serious project accidents, offering bribes and faking public tenders. They were fined 75,000 yuan each.

The 186.6-meter steel tower in Jinzhou City was under construction when it broke into three parts on July 23 last year.

Bad design, substandard materials and unqualified farmers were used to construct the tower, resulting in the tower's collapse and a subsequent economic loss of 2.75 million yuan, according to prosecutors.

With a total investment of more than 3.2 million yuan, construction experienced numerous delays. It was to have been completed last February, earlier reports said.
