Disabled man abandoned in street after being run over
A disabled old man, who was still in a coma, was taken out of the hospital by two strangers and abandoned at the place where he was run over by a car, Guangzhou Daily reported today.
Zhang Rupao, 57, had six ribs broken and sustained severe damage to his lung after he was run over by a car while lying drunk in a street in Shantou City, Guangdong Province on August 27.
The driver reported the accident to the police and Zhang was sent to a nearby hospital, the newspaper said.
However, the next day at 11am Zhang was picked up by two strangers who returned him to the crash scene where Zhang lay stranded for two days until an acquaintance recognized him.
Zhang said a man forced him to make finger prints before they left the hospital.
Doctors suggested that Zhang do not leave the hospital since he was not in a good condition, but he was still taken away.
The stranger gave 1,000 yuan to a seller near the scene, saying "this was the compensation for Zhang" and went away, according to the newspaper.
After lying on the street for two days, Zhang was finally discovered by a villager who later called his family on August 30.
"He was dying," said Zhang Huanquan, the old man's brother.
The brother said Zhang was physically handicapped and made a living by selling fruits in a wet market. Zhang Rupao, a heavy drinker, sometimes slept in the street after bingeing on booze, he said.
The police arranged a meeting for the culprit driver and Zhang's family on September 1 but the two sides didn't reach an agreement on extra compensation.
Zhang's family said they haven't received any written result of the accident while the police refused to make any comment on the issue, the newspaper said.
