Disciplinary officials detained over death of lawmaker

TWO disciplinary officials in central China's Hubei Province are under investigation after a local lawmaker accused of corruption died in custody.

Mou Zezhong, a division director of the Enshi Prefecture Disciplinary Committee, and Mou Laijun, a senior member of the Lichuan City Party Committee, have been detained for investigation over the incident, according to the Enshi government website yesterday.

Enshi authorities released an autopsy report on Friday, saying Ran Jianxin, 49, a lawmaker in Lichuan City of Enshi Prefecture, died of "acute respiratory failure" which might be caused by "physical restriction and mental stimulation" during his detention.

Ran died on June 4, the forth day of his detention on corruption charges. About 1,500 people gathered outside the Lichuan government building on Thursday morning and confronted police who were deployed to guard the building. It took local authorities hours to disperse the crowd.

Li Wei, the city's deputy Party secretary who was in charge of the disciplinary department, was suspended following the incident.
