Discredited health guru sees office demolished
THE flagship consultation office of a discredited health guru has been torn down in Beijing.
Zhang Wuben, 47, shot to national fame by prescribing cheap food recipes to improve people's health but has came under fire when it was discovered he had made up his medical background.
The Beijing Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium, which rented the building to Zhang Wuben for his Wubentang office, declined to comment on the demolition, but some employees said the building was illegally built.
Several patients from Shanxi Province arrived at the demolition site yesterday, wanting to get back their reservation fees of 20,000 yuan (US$2,928) for a "Wuben Health Camp."
But two other Wubentang offices in Beijing were operating, the Legal Mirror report said. The consultations are now given by Zhang's students rather than Zhang himself.
Wubentang's business boomed after Zhang published the best-selling book "Keep Healthy by Eating Well" to promote his healthy food recipes.
In his book, Zhang advised large intakes of cheap food such as green beans and eggplants to cure high blood pressure and diabetes.
He claimed to have studied at Beijing Medical University and was one of the senior nutrition experts with the Ministry of Health.
But the medical university denied he had studied there and Ministry officials denied he was an expert.
