Disease kills 9 kids in Shandong
HEALTH officials yesterday ordered emergency medical teams to inspect hundreds of villages in eastern China's Shandong Province amid a worsening hand, foot and mouth outbreak that has killed at least nine children in less than two weeks.
Shandong had no fatalities from the disease last year. But this strain has been especially virulent, the provincial health bureau said.
At least seven deaths have occurred in the city of Heze alone, the health bureau said, with the first reported on March 22. The other two were in the nearby city of Jining, it said.
The inspections will cover 600 villages under Heze's jurisdiction, the health bureau said. The cases are part of a nationwide outbreak that had killed 19 children by March 26.
