Disgraced Party official handed death sentence

A COURT in central China’s Henan Province yesterday sentenced former Guangdong Party bigwig Zhou Zhenhong to death with a two-year reprieve for taking huge bribes and holding properties from unknown sources.

Zhou, former head of the United Front Work Department of the Party’s Guangdong provincial committee, took bribes worth more than 24.6 million yuan (US$4.30 million) between 2002 and 2011, the Xinyang Intermediate People’s Court said.

The court said he abused his power to help promote others and gave them priorities.

It said the 57-year-old could not give proper explanation of his  assets worth more than 37 million yuan.

All the ill-gotten money has been recovered, and his  personal property will be confiscated.

Zhou was dubbed a “scholar official” because he used to be the dean and professor of physics at Guangdong University of Technology. He began his political career in 1996 and was promoted as mayor of Zhanjiang in 1998 and mayor of Maoming in 2002 before being elected a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee in 2007.

China’s top Party disciplinary watchdog said Zhou was investigated for serious violations on January 17, 2012, just days after he made his last public appearance at the annual session of the Guangdong Provincial People’s Congress.

A former Party chief of Maoming, Luo Yinguo, said it was Zhou who promoted Yang Guangliang as vice mayor of Maoming. Yang has been convicted of taking more than 50 million yuan in bribes, a report on caixin.com claimed.

Another disgraced official, Jin Daoming, is alleged to have kept several mistresses and maintained shady ties with businessmen. He was expelled as vice chairman of Shanxi Provincial People’s Congress Standing Committee.

The 61-year-old is reportedly being investigated for covering up illegal business when he was the secretary of the Shanxi Discipline Inspection Commission and secretary of Shanxi Politics and Law Committee in 2010 and 2011.
