Disgraced cop's wife faces trial
THE wife of a former senior Chongqing police officer, Peng Changjian, who was jailed for life for corruption and protecting crime gangs, stood trial yesterday for money laundering and bribery.
Businesswoman Liu Guanying is accused of laundering the cash Peng took in bribes, prosecutors said in Chongqing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court.
Police investigations found 16.22 million yuan (US$2.37 million) in Peng's family bank accounts and Liu's business income accounted for 9.17 million yuan.
Prosecutors said Liu led the high life, with every luxury brand in Chongqing calling her to notify her of new collections.
She lost more than 800,000 yuan on the stock market and squandered 90,000 yuan in traveling abroad.
Peng, 47, was convicted of taking 4.71 million yuan in bribes and conniving with the city's notorious crime rings.
Peng is former deputy director of the city's public security bureau, who claimed he took the money for socializing.
