Disgraced railway officials reappear in new jobs
Two railway officials, sacked after a train collision killed 72 and injured 416 in eastern Shandong Province in 2008, have been appointed to new posts.
Chen Gong, former director of Ji'nan Railway Bureau, and Chai Tiemin, former Party secretary of the bureau, were removed from their posts hours after China's worst rail accident happened on April 28, 2008.
The crash involved a Beijing-Qingdao high-speed train that was traveling at 131 kilometers per hour on a section with a speed limit of 80kph. The train failed to negotiate a bend and several cars in the rear derailed and crashed into another train alongside.
Chen and Chai recently reappeared in public as chairman of Qingdao-Rongcheng Intercity Rail Co Ltd and deputy Party secretary of China Railway Special Cargo Service Co Ltd, respectively, today's 21st Century Business Herald reported.
The paper said Liu Zhijun, then railway minister, received an administrative punishment due to the accident, but no senior railway officials resigned or were dismissed.
Liu was removed from his post last February for "severe violation of discipline." He was also held responsible for a bullet train collision in July 2011 that killed 40 passengers and injured 172 others.
