Displaced monks pray for quake victims
The earthquakes in Nepal disrupted the lives of 2,566 monks and nuns when it damaged 242 temples in neighboring Tibet Autonomous Region, the regional religious affairs bureau said yesterday.
The bureau said they had been relocated to temporary settlements.
At Qoigar Temple, Abbot Jamba Gonbo said last month’s quakes had damaged 20 Buddha statues in the temple and three gold-plated figures were buried in the rubble.
Gonbo said dormitories were destroyed and the temple hall badly damaged.
“We have held several prayer rituals for quake victims in nearby villages,” the abbot said.
The 7.9-magnitude earthquake which struck Nepal on April 25 and ensuing aftershocks left nearly 9,000 people dead and destroyed or damaged tens of thousands of houses in Nepal.
The death toll in Tibet stands at 25, with four missing and 797 injured.
The quake even moved a township and county in Tibet, a Chinese expert said yesterday.
Gyirong and Nyalam County, which border Nepal, shifted about 60 centimeters, said Wang Qi, a professor at China University of Geosciences who is leading a research team in the region.
