Distiller held for ‘Viagra liquor’
A DISTILLERY owner in central China’s Hubei Province who added the active ingredient in Viagra to his spirits to boost sales has been detained by police.
The distiller, surnamed Huang, came to the attention of food and drug authorities after they heard reports of drinkers praising the liquor, chinanews.com reported yesterday.
Huang, owner of Jiudaoquan Ecological Agriculture Development Company in Jianshi County, is said to have hit upon the idea of mixing the anti-impotence drug with baijiu — a fiery Chinese white spirit — in January.
Searching online, he found a supplier of sildenafil, the main component of Viagra, in Qingdao, in China’s eastern Shandong Province, and bought a kilogram for 2,400 yuan (US$389).
To test out his new venture, Huang added 120 milligrams of sildenafil to 100 milliliters of liquor and was impressed with the results, said the report.
Calling his special baijiu Dizunjiu and marketing it as an aphrodisiac, Huang produced 750 liters of the liquor containing 130 milligrams of sildenafil per 100 milliliters alcohol.
He sold it to frequent customers in Jianshi County and Wuhan City in Hubei, at prices of up to 900 yuan (US$146) for a box of 15 bottles. His baijiu came to the attention of the food and drug authorities in Jianshi County this month.
The local FDA heard reports of drinkers discussing the alcohol, saying that it tasted good and that while they felt dizzy, their sexual performance improved.
After being held by police, Huang is said to have admitted that although he knew adding Viagra to alcohol is illegal, he took the risk because of debts.
Officers said that sildenafil-laced liquor can cause serious side effects in people with heart disease and those who are susceptible to strokes.
