Distraught father held
A MAN was detained after he held an official of the Red Cross Foundation at knifepoint in Beijing when learning his ailing son was not entitled to financial aid.
Sun Wenhui, 36, from Hebei Province was apprehended by police after taking an official of the charity organization hostage for more than an hour. Sun became agitated after he was told his 10-year-old son, who has aplastic anemia, a deficiency of all types of blood cells, didn't qualify for a subsidy that was only available to children with leukemia, Beijing News reported yesterday.
The family had already borrowed 300,000 yuan (US$45,975) since the boy was diagnosed with the deadly disease in March, but medical bills continue to pile up.
They visited the Red Cross Foundation in Beijing to apply for financial aid. Staff members denied their request as there was no program for aplastic anemia patients.
Sun left home and went to the Red Cross again on March 31 without informing his wife or son. He carried a knife wrapped in newspapers, the report said.
The Red Cross didn't disclose more details as police are investigating the case.
"Sun was mentally unstable at the time," an unnamed police officer told the newspaper.
According to Liu Wenfang, Sun's wife, the Red Cross wrote a letter to Beijing police, in which it expressed sympathy and understanding to the family's predicament. The Red Cross hasn't confirmed this information.
