Diving icon and tycoon 'to marry in October'
WHEN Guo Jingjing, China's diving diva, marries Kenneth Fok (Kenneth Fok Kai-kong), a member of one of Hong Kong's richest families, in October the celebrations will cost about 100 million yuan (US$15.8 million), according to Hong Kong media reports.
At a public appearance on Wednesday, the 30-year-old former sports star was reported to have silently confirmed her "big day" to reporters. Asked about an October wedding, she smiled and refused to confirm or deny the rumor.
Kenneth, 32, is the eldest son of business tycoon Timothy Fok (Timothy Fok Tsun-ting) and the eldest grandson of the late family dynasty founder, Henry Fok Ying-tung.
The family has a tradition in supporting and funding sporting developments in the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong.
The couple's seven-year romance began when Kenneth met Guo when she represented China at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
Their relationship was soon making headlines after a photograph of them was published.
Guo, from central China's Hebei Province, has won more Olympic medals than any other female diver. She announced her retirement last January.
After that, she was reported to have embarked on English language training programs abroad, a move widely believed to have been in preparation for her entry into the Fok family.
As a diving star and an heir to a billionaire tycoon's fortune, the couple have been hotly pursued by the paparazzi over the years.
Hong Kong media said the wedding - held in the month of Guo's birth - would have guests from a wide range of fields, including sport, politics and business.
Recently, the Fok family has been in the headlines as Henry Fok Ying-tung's relatives were involved in lawsuits over how to split and manage his inheritance.
Kenneth's mother is Loletta Chu, who was the 1977 Miss Hong Kong. She and Kenneth's father are divorced.
