Doc stabbed by ex-patient passes away
A RETIRED doctor in south China’s Guangdong Province who was stabbed by a former patient on Thursday has died.
Chen Zhongwei, the former director of stomatology at Guangdong General Hospital, died at 12:39pm on Saturday after falling into a coma, the hospital said.
Chen was attacked about 5:20pm on Thursday, according to police in Yuexiu District in the provincial capital Guangzhou.
After the assault, the male attacker jumped to his death from the balcony of Chen’s home, they said, adding that Chen’s wife was also injured in the attack.
The hospital confirmed that the man received medical treatment from Chen 25 years ago and had a history of mental problems.
There were two cases of violence against medical workers in 2014.
In March of that year, a doctor at the Chaozhou Central Hospital in Guangdong was forced to march as a form of shaming by relatives of a patient whose life the doctor failed to save.
A month earlier, a doctor in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province was beaten to death by a patient.
Vice Minister of Public Security Huang Ming said in March that police will try to crack down on hospital-related crimes.
