Doctor, 28, commits suicide over baby's death
A young doctor in central China's Henan Province committed suicide because she couldn't bear defamation and excessive demand for compensation by the relatives of a dead baby.
Zhang Juan, a 28-year-old pediatrician in Nanyang City Medical College No. 2 Hospital, swallowed 700 toxic digoxin pills on Tuesday afternoon at home and is still in deep coma, the local Dahe Daily reported today.
Zhang got a phone call from the baby's parent last Wednesday night on how to treat the boy's high fever. After inquiring about his symptoms, she found nothing abnormal and suggested the parent to feed the boy some febrifuge.
Zhang also asked the parent to call her 30 minutes later to inform the boy's latest development, but the parent didn't call her afterwards. The next morning, the baby was admitted to the hospital and soon died, the paper said.
The bereft parents vented their anger on Zhang, blaming her for their baby's death, insulted her in public and asked her to pay 150,000 yuan (US$23,800) in damages.
In a letter to her parents written before her suicide, Zhang wrote: "I couldn't bear such injustice and I'm overcome with despair. Do I have to choose death to prove my innocence?"
The hospital said it is investigating Zhang's connection with the baby's death, the paper said.
