Doctor accused of taking kickbacks

A CHINESE doctor who treated the world's first SARS patient is now under investigation for allegedly accepting large sums of money through unlawful kickbacks.

Luo Hongtao, who headed the reciprocal department of the No. 1 People's Hospital in Foshan City, Guangdong Province, has been referred to judicial authorities for allegedly getting kickbacks from pharmaceutical companies, according to a statement by the discipline watchdog of the Communist Party of China's Foshan committee.

The discipline inspection arm of CPC Foshan launched a probe against Luo before the judicial investigation after a whistle-blower charged her with taking millions of yuan in kickbacks from pharmaceutical companies in exchange for her support of certain drugs.

Doctors in Luo's department had to follow her treatment arrangements, forcing them to use certain medicines, the discipline arm said.

The whistle-blower was reported to be Luo's former colleague who was expelled from her department for an unknown reason, according to Guangzhou-based Southern Metropolis Daily.
