Doctor asks surgery patient to buy scalpel from supplier he recommends

A SURGEON in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous has been accused of asking his patient to buy a scalpel from his recommended medical supplier, but neither the hospital nor the local government has taken action in the alleged violation, Nanguo Morning News reported today.

A Liuzhou city resident surnamed Guan said he took his mother-in-law to the Workers’ Hospital in Liuzhou City to check her wrists on November 18, and the doctor recommended surgery, the newspaper reported. The type of surgery was not disclosed.

Unexpectedly, the surgeon, surnamed Sun, asked him to spend 800 yuan (US$131.28) on a scalpel because the hospital didn’t have any, the report said. Also, Sun said he could recommend a seller, Guan said.

On November 21, a salesperson visited his mother-in-law but raised the price to 1,000 yuan. In order to undergo the surgery as soon as possible, the elderly woman agreed, the newspaper reported.

The expense wasn’t included in the details of the medical bills, Guan said, adding that the hospital also didn’t return the scalpel.

The sale voucher showed the seller was Liuzhou Sanxiong Science and Technology Company.

The report said Sun did not want to talk about the case or whether he might have received kickbacks.

Yang Xiaohui, a senior official with the hospital, refused to say whether the company was doing business with the hospital or just with Sun.

However, Yang conceded that the scalpel did not go through the hospital’s bidding procedure, which was a violation of the rules. Yang said the scalpel was approved as safe.

Yang also said 1,000 yuan is in the bottom price range for that type of scalpel, which is imported from Germany.

Officials from the hospital’s Party Committee also backed Sun up, saying he had informed the patient about the purchase in advance and they had signed a contract, the report said.

City health authorities haven’t taken action in the case, the newspaper said.
