Doctor defends crash victim's rescue

A DOCTOR in southwest China's Sichuan Province admitted that she did not resuscitate a road crash victim because she thought he was fatally injured.

She pronounced 46-year-old Zhang Houming dead on the scene and worked to rescue his injured 23-year-old son whom she thought had a bigger chance of survival, the doctor told today's Beijing Times newspaper.

Shi Ling, of Neijiang City Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, was defending herself against the family's accusation that her error had delayed proper rescue for Zhang, who was later found alive at a funeral home. He eventually died after a second rescue attempt.

The Neijiang government said yesterday the Zhangs had agreed to an autopsy to determine the true cause of the father's death. The government is investigating.
