Doctor detained, officials fired after newborn sold

A GYNECOLOGIST who allegedly sold a newborn in Shaanxi Province was detained yesterday morning by police officers while three officials with a hospital where the boy was born were sacked for malpractice.

The baby, now on his way back to his home in Fuping County, had yet to have a DNA test to confirm his identity, the county’s public security bureau said.

Zhang Shuxia was accused of selling the baby for 21,600 yuan (US$3,494) on July 17. Wang Li, president of Fuping Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital, and two of the facility’s vice presidents were sacked over the incident.

The local government appointed a deputy director of the county’s health bureau to serve as the hospital’s acting president.

Last week, it was exposed that Zhang lied to the parents of the baby boy born on July 16. Zhang said the child had infectious diseases and a disability although all prenatal checkups showed no problems for both mother and fetus.

Zhang was said to have persuaded the child’s parents to let her deal with the baby for 100 yuan.

On July 20, the baby’s mother suspected her child had been abducted and contacted the police.

Reports said Zhang had sold the baby to two people from Shanxi Province, who in turn sold the newborn for 30,000 yuan.

After the case was made public, seven families reported they had similar experiences.

“We trusted Zhang because she is a doctor we all know,” an old villager in Fuping said in an online video.

His grandson was said to have died under Zhang’s care and buried seven years ago.
