Doctor killer sentenced to death
A MAN accused of stabbing a doctor to death and injuring two others was sentenced to death yesterday, according to a ruling by the Taizhou City Intermediate People’s Court in the eastern Zhejiang Province.
The 34-year-old Lian Enqing said he carried out the attack because he was unhappy with an operation on his nose at the Wenling No. 1 People’s Hospital in March.
While the hospital claimed the surgery was successful, Lian felt cheated by the doctors.
On October 25, he returned to the hospital carrying a knife and hammer.
Unable to find the doctor responsible for his operation, Lian attacked Wang Yunjie, the head of the ear, nose and throat department.
China News Service reported that Lian had written “Wang Yunjie die” on the walls of his room on July 30.
Wang was stabbed to death and two other doctors were injured. One suffered serious chest wounds, while the other sustained light injuries.
At an earlier hearing, Lian’s sister Lian Chao confirmed reports that her brother had been treated for mental problems at a Shanghai hospital for two months last summer.
She told the court that her brother had suffered respiratory problems and discomfort after the nose surgery in March 2013, Xinhua news agency reported.
“While the hospital confirmed that the surgery was successful, Lian felt he was cheated by the doctors,” the sister said.
Her brother, she said, suffered from “persistent delusional disorder.”
Lian denied at a trial hearing on January 22 that he had mental health problems, saying he took complete responsibility for his actions. But he said he still had doubts about the success of the nose surgery.
The court found he was “conscious of his crime and had the capacity for criminal responsibility.”
Lian Chao said they will appeal against the ruling though Lian had admitted his guilt, according to China News Service.
Violent attacks on doctors and other health care workers in the form of beatings, threats, kidnappings, verbal abuse and murder reached 17,243 cases in 2010 in China, the latest year for which such figures are available, according to health authorities.
