Doctor praised for keeping working during attack

A DOCTOR has been praised for continuing to give emergency treatment to a patient even though he was being attacked by her companion.

Wang Xixiong, 30, from Sanya City in south China, is now in hospital after suffering concussion in the attack, The Beijing News reported yesterday.

The Alibaba Foundation, set up by Chinese Internet giant Alibaba, has awarded Wang 10,000 yuan (US$1,625).

Wang risked his life to save someone else in a selfless act, that will increase the public’s respect for the profession, the foundation said.

“I just did what a doctor should do,” Wang told the newspaper. “I’m surprised and flattered by all the publicity.”

The drama occurred at 1:30am on Monday when a woman, her face covered in blood from cuts to her forehead, walked into the Sanya People’s Hospital accompanied by a man.

“She had covered her wounds with her hands and was crying for help,” Wang recalled. “I saw blood trickling down her forehead and suspected that she might have cut an artery.”

While he was cleaning her wounds, the woman told Wang that she had a blood-clotting disorder. Shortly afterward, she experienced difficulties breathing and showed symptoms of traumatic shock, Wang said.

When Wang decided to transfer the woman to another room for emergency treatment, a man around the age of 30 rushed toward the doctor, demanding to know whether her condition was getting worse.

“I briefly explained, but he claimed I’d started emergency treatment before I knew her condition,” Wang said. “When I told him it was really urgent, he started to obstruct me.”

While he was administering oxygen, Wang felt a blow to the back of his head that left him stunned. As he collapsed semi-conscious onto the bed, he felt his neck being squeezed for about 20 seconds.

Throughout his ordeal, Wang continued giving the woman oxygen.

“It was subconscious, I didn’t have time to think. If I didn’t continue giving her oxygen, she might have died,” he said.

When Wang recovered, he tried to get the man to leave. Security guards arrived soon after and removed him.

It was reported that Wang’s attacker had also injured the woman. The man has been detained by police.

There have been a number of attacks, some fatal, on medics in hospitals in recent months.

Overstretched resources and public mistrust of the profession have been cited as factors.
