Doctor removes stitches because patient can't afford surgery
BECAUSE a migrant worker couldn't afford his hand surgery, a doctor in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province, removed the stitches he had just sewn on the wounded hand of the young man without giving him anesthesia, the Modern Times reported today.
The Wuhan No. 3 People's Hospital said yesterday the doctor surnamed He had been suspended from his job and the hospital also made an official apology to the young worker surname Zeng.
The 20-year-old Zeng told the newspaper that he injured his two fingers when he was washing dishes in the restaurant on August 5. He could not stop the bleeding so his coworker brought him to the hospital immediately.
When Zeng was having his gash stitched in the surgery room, another doctor told his coworker surnamed Wu to help pay the 1,830 yuan bill. However, Wu only had 1,000 yuan and their boss was on a trip, so they could not get enough money.
Wu told the newspaper that the doctor insisted that they must pay the entire bill on that day. "Pay the bill or remove the stitches," the doctor said. Eventually, Zeng had to let the doctor remove the stitches just sewn on his wounded fingers – without anesthetics.
After that, Zeng went to another hospital and finished the surgery with only about 800 yuan.
The doctor said to the newspaper that it was not him but the hospital that set the price and it was Zeng who insisted to have the stitches removed.
Chen Yutan, deputy director of Wuhan No. 3 People's Hospital, told the newspaper that their prices are consistent with the government standards and they would cooperate with authorities in investigation.
