Doctor's hug fractures chest of elderly patient

A hospital in Zhengzhou, Henan Province compensated an 80-year-old woman with 210,000 yuan (US$33,621) for causing her thoracic compression fracture when an elated doctor hugged her to celebrate her recovery from a vertebral fracture, a local newspaper reported today.

The doctor surnamed Zhang had been treating the elderly patient surnamed Liu since February 2010. The woman showed signs of improvement seven months after undergoing therapies administered by Zhang.

The woman was suffering from a vertebral compression fracture, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis, the Dahe Daily reported.

During a visit on September 18, 2010, Zhang was so pleased with Liu's improvement that he hugged Liu and lifted her up from the floor, but Liu cried out in pain.

Diagnostic scan showed she had a thoracic compression fracture and she was bed-ridden again.

The hospital exempted her from all medical costs incurred after September 18, 2010 and paid compensation for her nursing, food and nutrition costs and for her mental suffering.

Experts said many old people have fragile bones due to osteoporosis. Even hugging can cause them fractures.
