Doctors remove chopstick from man who swallowed it during quarrel
A HOT-TEMPERED man who swallowed a 12-centimeter-long, stainless steel chopstick during a quarrel with his wife during a meal was out of danger after doctors removed the eating implement, the Yangzi Evening News reported today.
The Jiangsu Province resident, surnamed Zhang, refused to see a doctor in a fit of pique after he inserted the chopstick into his throat. The next day, however, Zhang felt pain in his throat and went to the local hospital.
The chopstick had not slipped down to his stomach as doctors thought it might have, but was stuck at the pharynx, the part of the alimentary canal that extends from the mouth to the larynx, where it becomes continuous with the esophagus.
A CT scan showed Zhang had an infection as a result of the chopstick incident.
Zhang was then transferred to Jiangsu Provincial People’s Hospital where doctors successfully removed the chopstick with a clamp.
The procedure was performed by doctors specializing in chest, eye, ear, nose and throat conditions, said the report.
The larynx has walls of cartilage and muscle and contains the vocal cords enveloped in folds of mucous membrane.
