Domestic movies storm box office
DOMESTIC films have raked in the most money on the Chinese mainland during the Spring Festival holiday, beating foreign rivals including Hollywood blockbuster "Cloud Atlas."
"Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons," a fantasy action comedy directed by Hong Kong actor Stephen Chow, earned 422 million yuan (US$67.73 million) since it premiered on February 10.
"Journey" set box-office records three straight days for a Chinese movie, said Huayi Brothers Media Group, the film's producer. On Valentine's Day, it peaked by earning 122 million yuan on the mainland, breaking the single-day record of 112 million yuan set by "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" in 2011.
The "101st Marriage Proposal," a low-budget domestic romantic comedy earned 45 million yuan on Tuesday, its release day. The film earned 30 percent of all ticket sales for the day.
It set a record for a romance film on Valentine's Day, according to its producer, New Classic Media Corporation.
In addition, Chinese animated films have done well during the holiday. The latest installment of "Pleasant Goat and the Big, Big Wolf" has earned more than 100 million yuan since it was released on January 24.
