Donation comes too late to save young patient

A woman in southeast Fujian Province was notified of a 50,000 yuan donation for her sick daughter by the local staff of the Red Cross Society of China, 35 days after the 19-year-old died of cancer.

Zheng Jinfeng received the notice from the Red Cross staff in Yongding County on Monday and it is still unknown when the money would be transferred to her, the Strait Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.

Local authorities launched a donation campaign after the media reported about the plight of Su Tiantian who had suffered from a rare tumor in her uterus for two years. Many people responded with donations sent to a special account opened by the local Red Cross, but the money never reached the patient.

Some companies delayed the donation payments, said Shen Bukui, a Red Cross official in Yongding County. The Red Cross staff had checked the account three times to rule out any misuse, Shen added.

Asked why the money hasn't been handed to the family, Shen said the signature of the local health bureau director was needed for each transfer, but the director's seat was current vacant, resulting in the delay.

Su died on July 11 due to organ failure. Her mother decided to give the donation to other sick children since her daughter has died.
