Donations for leukemia father to be returned

NEARLY 2.7 million yuan (US$392,000) in donations to a father whose 5-year-old daughter has leukemia is to be returned to donors’ accounts, social media platform WeChat said yesterday.

Luo Er’s posts about his daughter had gone viral, but it was revealed he owned three apartments and that the cost of Luo Yixiao’s treatment was mostly covered by insurance.

A statement said the decision to return the money had been proposed by Luo and his friend Liu Xiafeng and agreed to by the Shenzhen Civil Affairs Bureau and WeChat.

The bureau urged people to ensure donations were made to official charities where individuals can apply for assistance.

WeChat’s rewards function resulted in nearly 2.53 million yuan going to Luo’s personal account and more than 101,000 yuan to an account operated by Liu’s company.

WeChat said that the rewards function allowed accounts to receive 50,000 yuan at most in a day. However, the huge amount of traffic to Luo’s account had caused a bug in the system which failed to block donations over that amount.

WeChat said it hadn’t deleted Luo’s post because he had not asked for money. An article on the company account was deleted as it had encouraged users to share the post, with Liu’s company paying one yuan for every repost.

Liu had wanted to help but Luo had declined to receive money from his friend directly.

In an earlier statement, Luo and Liu had said the donations would be used to set up a foundation for children with leukemia if donors agreed.
