Donations help save brain-damaged child
A three-year-old boy in Henan Province who suffered severe brain damage after falling down the stairs when trying to protect his mother is recovering, thanks to donations from the public.
Doctors said Zhang Haorui, the boy, is in stable condition after having two operations in the intensive care unit at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University in Zhengzhou City yesterday.
But close observation is needed for Zhang's brain damage and lung inflammation, the chief doctor Sun Rongqing told Dahe Daily yesterday.
The child was rushed to hospital on September 26 after he slipped on a corn cob and fell down the stairs. He was reportedly trying to stop his mother who is mentally disabled from going upstairs, where his father had placed corn threshing machine, which had sharp edges that could hurt them.
His father Zhang Guang-you, who is physically disabled and sells corn for a living, said he once considered giving up saving the boy as the family was too poor to cover the medical expenses.
Fortunately, many kind-hearted people offered a hand after the child's plight appeared on the front page of the Dahe Daily.
A businessman, who refused to give his name, promised to pay for all the treatment costs until the boy can be released from hospital. Meanwhile, a 92-year-old woman came by wheelchair yesterday to donate 1,000 yuan (US$150) .
The child's family said the donation money has been enough for his treatment.
