Donations pour in for man in scam to keep wife alive

THE man who allegedly evaded medical bills to keep his wife alive has received donations from netizens of over 330,000 yuan (US$51,744) – enough to cover his wife's dialysis fees for 10 years, Beijing Times reported today.

Fan Wei, a media personality and Xue Manzi, an angel investor, launched the donation drive on Weibo for the man surnamed Liao on July 13. Nearly 3,900 netizens have taken part in the donation so far.

Liao's wife was diagnosed with kidney failure five years ago and needs dialysis twice a week at a cost of 420 yuan for each treatment. After spending all his savings to keep his wife alive, Liao faked a total of 49 Beijing Hospital invoices from the end of 2007 to September 2011 to avoid paying for his wife's dialysis fees of nearly 170,000 yuan.

"Liao should be punished since he broke the law, but no one would take care of his wife if he was sent to prison. We should try to avoid the tragedy," Fan told the newspaper.

Liao yesterday signed a letter authorizing Fan and Xue to help collect contributions for his wife and authorized the China Social Assistance Foundation to use the money exclusively for his wife's treatment. He expressed his gratitude to all the kindhearted people who offered help, while he was still awaiting the court's final judgment in his case.

To donate, anyone can visit the donation project "Will the Beijing Love Story go on?" on Weibo.com and enter a donation amount. The money can be paid via online bank transfer to the China Social Assistance Foundation.
