Donor hero stole to help his sick son

A FATHER, once branded a hero for donating a kidney to save the life of a stranger, has been arrested for stealing 150 yuan (US$22.08) to pay for his son's medical treatment.

Xie Yongfu, of Changsha City in Hunan Province, was arrested last Sunday.

Xie's son suffered a stroke in 2007 but Xie, in failing health himself, had lost his job and couldn't afford the medical bills.

Yesterday's Xiaoxiang Morning Herald said Xie had donated his left kidney to save the life of a man he didn't know in a neighboring village, Wei Chenglong.

So as not to worry his family, Xie had kept his decision a secret. Despite being told to rest, Xie went back to work at a brick factory as if nothing had happened.

Since then, however, his health had deteriorated.

Xie received 8,200 yuan from Wei and 30,000 yuan from public donations, but his family still struggled to make ends meet.

When his son fell ill, Xie teamed up with two other people to rob a motorist. His colleagues were jailed earlier.
