Dormitory collapse claims at least 17 in Hebei

A BUILDING collapse has killed at least 17 people and injured three others in the capital city of Hebei Province today.

The two-story building built in the 1980s was a dormitory for steel company workers, according to Hebei Daily. It collapsed at around 10am in Shijiazhuang City after a big storm.

Twenty people were rescued from under the debris and three of them were still being treated for injuries.

A witness said a bolt of lightning hit the building and it collapsed, according to Xinhua news agency.

There was speculation that the dormitory collapse was trying to be covered up after unidentified people assaulted reporters from Xinhua news agency and Hebei TV station. Their cameras were also damaged.

The owners of the factory are now under police control for further investigation.

More than 120 firefighters were still searching for survivors, the report said.

They were delayed in reaching the site as the storm flooded some of the city's streets.
